The irony here is that someone in say the UK cannot purchase digital music from the US Amazon store because record companies want Europe and the UK to pay the higher prices for the same product. In a location like Thailand we can't buy any legal digital version from any source - which is why the pirates are doing so well here of course. Another irony for those in the UK is that it still won't be legal to download any of the Beatles catalogue DRM free, that content is all locked up.

On the subject of MP3s, be careful what kind of MP3 player you buy as it may be mistaken as a gun. This happened in Stoke-on-Trent when Darren Nixon was listening to some music on his 4GB Philips player when armed police turned up and held him at gunpoint. It turns out some lady thought he had a gun in his pocket. So unless you want to be arrested, swabbed for DNA and have your mug shot taken for listening to music make sure you have your MP3 player when people can see it.

Plextor has done it again with the soon to be released PX-B920SA and PX-B300SA hybrid HD-DVD and Blu-ray SATA PC drives. The first one will write to BD-R at 4x speed and of course CDs and DVDs. The second unit is less expensive and just writes to the usual formats. No pricing info as yet but it will be a good way to hedge your bets on the winning format.

Yes, it took another teenager to do it, this time to crack the latest iPhone firmware versions and in doing so beat out a bunch of other hackers working on the process. By the time you read this, someone will have packed the whole thing into a neat utility, but kudos to George Hotz, aka "Geohot" for getting there first.

In some ways it seems that the more progress we see as far as Windows-based application software, the slower things become and the more bits and pieces that we never use are stuffed into successive releases. I'd like to see a slimmer Windows and Office in the next release.

Industry news

FireFox 3 is available in beta and by the time you read this it might be ready for the average user to try it out. Changes include a faster page rendering engine, one-click bookmarking, better downloading support that included a progress bar and built in virus checking. Security has also been improved and Extended Validation SSL certificates and stricter SSl page control has been added. Mozilla is also offering live support for FireFox users.

Amazon started it in the US but Play.com beat them across the pond by being the first in the UK to offer legal digital rights management (DRM)-free music downloads with major label backing, OK so far it's only EMI. No Apple has legal DRM-free downloads as well in the UK but only for its AAC play on iPod only format. Amazon has four of the big players in the US.

The tracks will be sold at a very respectable 320Kbits/s from Play.com, compared to the 256Kbits/s encoding from Apple and Amazon. For the most part 256Kbits/s is fine for digital downloads, as far as the average human ear is concerned at least.

How my web site was hijacked (2)

I was having the usual computer woes this week and I realised that after over 30 years playing with computers that things have steadily become worse over the years rather than better. While the interfaces have become more aesthetically pleasing they have also become more complex. I did find one simplifying product this week called Enso Launch that I passed along to our own Wanda Sloan for review but in general it keeps getting harder.

I had my Start toolbar vanish for a while today and in the end only a reboot made it come back. I followed the recommendations first like pressing Ctrl-Esc, running explorer.exe from a command line and so on but nothing happened. Sometimes the only way to fix things with Windows is to just reboot, sometimes it takes more than once. Why this happens is one of the great Mysteries of Windows.

Office 2007 is on my new office notebook - it has the nice new ribbon with all sorts of things on it but I have yet to locate a few of my favourite tools. I did discover OneNote 2007 tucked away on the Office 2007 disk and this looks to a very useful tool for a writer so more on that one later. Outlook 2007 however seems to dominate the CPU cycles and outnumbers any other application as far as different services it hooks into. It also takes a while to appear, as do Word and Excel for that matter.

How my web site was hijacked (1)

I want to start this week with the story of a hijacked web site. Mine. I wanted to look something up on my site recently and was surprised to find that the content was no longer mine, instead it was content for a Bangkok-based translation service.

On checking with my hosting service they were also surprised that this had happened and apparently it involved piggybacking on a shared IP address, something I have now changed to a fixed IP. It took a couple of days for my web site to reappear because the change had to be reflected across the word's DNS servers but it is up and running again now.

My first thought was that my domain name had somehow expired without me knowing about it but as it turned out this was a simple and deliberate hijacking by a local company. The story highlights the need to check and update your sites from time to time to make sure that it has not been hacked. This also means that the security at your hosting service needs to be solid.
